We can summarize the creative process as the application of an individual's concept to a medium which they have some skills in manipulating. For the ambitious artist the task is to first find the medium in which they want to represent something, develop some level of skill in shaping that medium to represent simple things, and finally to choose something for representation which can be realized without too many distracting refinements of technique.
The surer one is about how to do something, the more concentration can be applied towards the question of what to do and the more natural and unobtrusive the medium will be in conveying the intended impression.
The 5 stages of creative process are as follows -
1) THE INCEPTION - Finding a problem and defining a creative challenge.
2) THE SATURATION - After the creative challenge you have defined, you need to know what has already happened. (What designs has been done?)
3) THE INCUBATION - We walk away from a problem for a little while. Incubation involves nullifying over information, often unconsciously.
4) ILLUMINATION - Our best ideas do not come when we are cribbing about the problem. It might come when you are sleeping or exercising or doing something completely different.
5) THE VERIFICATION - Getting your idea approved. This stage is about challenging and testing and evaluating creative ideas you have.
In other words,
EMPATHIZE -> DEFINE -> IDEATE -> PROTOTYPE -> TEST
